    Here's what happens next.

    Early Intervention ends at age 3. The transition to school services can feel overwhelming — but you have rights, and we have the roadmap.

    The Transition Timeline

    2 years, 3–9 months

    Make a transition plan

    For children who may be eligible for preschool special education, transition steps and a conference generally happen at least 90 days, and up to 9 months, before the third birthday.

    By 2 years, 9 months

    Refer to the school district

    With your consent, Early Intervention can notify and refer your child to the district. You may also send your own written evaluation request.

    Before age 3

    Complete eligibility and IEP meetings

    The district evaluates your child and determines eligibility. If eligible, the team develops the IEP and placement.

    Third birthday

    Eligible school services begin

    For a child referred by Early Intervention and found eligible, the IEP should be implemented by the third birthday.
